I really didn’t want to do this because quite frankly, I’m sick of hearing about Beyoncé right now whether good or bad. Everyone knows I’m a Beyoncé fan, but I didn’t even get tickets to her concert this go around after being present for her last three shows. The only reason I’m even doing this is due to the high accolades Kendrick Lamar is receiving for his genius performance on the Grammys last night. If you know me, you also know I’m a huge KDot fan and he’s my brother in my head; however, I happen to find issues with the fact that many individuals have been negatively comparing Beyoncé’s Super Bowl performance and “Formation” video while praising Kendrick’s Grammy performance last night. I beg to differ and am open minded enough to see the same message delivered in both with disparate artistry. In my views Beyoncé opted for a more unconventional route while Kendrick went with relatable visuals and deep lyricism as only he can do; but I still got similar messages from both.

The Generation Gap

Last night I discovered that I am no longer hip to the younger generation when I realized that Migos is three people who form a rap group and not just one person. Whoops lol, no wonder they sound like Gucci Mane to me sometimes and at other times they don’t. I really had no idea! Not only am I not hip to Migos being a group, but the current state of hip hop music just makes me cringe!! I was so excited when Brandy came out with MC Lyte, Yoyo, and Queen Latifah that I shot up in my seat so I could dance along to their performance. That’s my kind of music!!

Ridin’ Round in That H-Town

I’m pretty sure week by week I spend a good 1/4 of my days driving in the car. Whether I’m going to work, my internship, taking Trey somewhere, going to class, or traveling on weekends I am ALWAYS in the car. Ironically one of my favorite things to do to clear my head is to drive in the car alone. It really gives me time to reflect on life and get a better grasp on my thoughts. Whenever I’m behind the wheel, you can best believe that I have some dope music to accompany me for my ride. For the past few weeks, there have been three songs that I listen to everyday. Sometimes I’ll just throw on my SoundCloud app, turn on my “Chill Music” playlist and just keep these three tracks on repeat.

I’m so late with this blog that I didn’t even know if I should still post it, but I figured why not?? What’s a blog without the best personal experiences encountered on them right?? It was about three weeks ago when I got my whole life by meeting Sevyn Streeter. That Friday morning I got up at 3:15 AM per usual to get ready for my internship at 102 Jamz. You know it was the normal day, nothing special at all. I woke up in a great mood and I wasn’t tired which made it even better. The night before, Kyle had already text me asking me to be at the office a little before 5 so we could pre-record his news breaks because it was going to be a big day. I didn’t think any more of his text because we usually pre-record when we’re trying to get out early and it was Friday so why not?

Ever since Ashanti announced the release of Braveheart early last year, I was too excited to get my hands on her new music. Finally after several delays, I got it! I honestly can say that I’ve missed Ashanti on the R&B scene. I’ve always been a huge fan of her writing skills, and her personality and looks are just complimentary to her actual talent with the pen.

I have never been a huge Rick Ross fan, but his music always makes me feel luxurious. I used to listen to him a lot more back when he first came out. Luxury Tax, Here I Am, and This Is The Life are a few of my favorites by him to name a few. Well I decided to give Mastermind a listen because I knew the production would be good. I was right. I love this album from beginning to end and that shocked the hell outta me! I’ve been playing this every day since last week, especially during my long drives to my internship and to work.

[Shants Rants] Pulp Fiction x Miloh Smith

I blogged about Miloh Smith about a year ago when she released her first mixtape, Suite 404, and if you didn’t catch the wave then you’re losing tremendously in life. Miloh is the epitome of dope, I don’t know how else to put it. I haven’t been this excited about an artist since I discovered K’la’s Coldest Winter Ever mixtape 3 years ago. Miloh gives me life!! She’s a 23 year old Atlanta native and the best way I can describe her is “different”. Her sound is so breathtakingly unique and her lyrics have so much substance. I’m currently listening to this mixtape as I type this and I’m getting giddy just thinking about the quality of her music. Thank you Miloh!!

I’m about two weeks late on this mixtape, didn’t even know it had dropped! And to think I called myself keeping up with Miloh for the past year. My musichead friend Ruth in Jacksonville hit me with a “pop quiz” text today asking if I had the mixtape and I flew to datpiff.com to get it immediately. Then she kept insisting that I skip songs and listen to “Intexication” and now I know why. Ooh this quickly became my favorite on the whole mixtape. This song is so smooth, sensual, sexy, seductive… gahh it’s everything!

From the very first track “6:30 AM” Miloh sings about a love that she would kill for, even die for. The slow bass-filled beat of each track accompanied by her sultry voice and emotional lyrics makes the whole mixtape playback worthy. Miloh has a lackadaisical, sensual sound that is not like any other that I’ve heard. I really like what she’s bringing to the table and I can’t wait to see where her career takes her. I really recommend that ya’ll get up on Miloh and I even included the full mixtape after the break so you have no excuses not to listen! Check it out and let me know what you think… Does Miloh have that “it” factor??

[Throwback Thursday] Let Me Blow Ya Mind

WIth Lil Kim popping up pregnant and Nicki going innnn on her new track, it’s only right for me to show some love to our hip hop queens for throwback Thursday. We all fell in love with America’s pit bull in a skirt in the late 90’s and probably all wish she would reappear spitting like her old self. I downloaded her new album last year, but it just wasn’t the old Eve that I grew up quoting. However, you can’t talk about the best female rappers without bringing up Eve, and this song with Gwen Stefani took her straight to the top in mainstream. It peaked at Number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and earned Eve a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration… Catch the video after the break! SN: When I first heard this I remember thinking that this collab was genius. Ya’ll know I love me some Gwen!!!

Meagan Good’s Phenix Rose

Apparently I’ve been hiding under a rock because I didn’t know that Meagan Good has presented a bomb ass teen girl group! I know she had been promoting the group for some time on twitter; however, I thought this was the same group that she had started with her sister and friends. I wasn’t here for that much lol, but I’m all here for Phenix Rose! These girls can sangggg! I don’t have the details on any of their music at this time, and I went to their website but it’s written out in a different language. I do know that their names from left to right are Lexi, Kiarra, Linyae, and Raya but I’m not even sure about the spelling to be honest. Did I mention that they’re gorgeous??

Hopefully we’ll be hearing from them soon since they posted a practice performance video of a new song just two weeks ago. In the meantime, you can peep a video of them singing their own rendition of “All I Want For Christmas Is You” after the break! Do you think they have what it takes to make it in the industry??
